Italy is more than brushstrokes and marble. Look closely, past the bella figura, the beautiful image which is everything. From a distance, those villages perched high on the sylvan hills look charming, but many of them are dying undertakers are busier than obstetricians these days. Or those cats lolling among the fallen columns of Largo Argentina which look postcard pretty; seen up close, some hobble on three legs, others are blind--just a few of the thousands of stray pets abandoned each August across the city of Rome. And Nona will tell of the good old days of her youth when young women flaunted babies instead of Prada handbags. The stereotypes--the pious Catholics, the famous Italian famiglia, the smooth Casanova-are fading faster than Berlusconi fans in this evocative land.
Clare Fleishman dispels the usual suspects and uncovers the truth behind other pressing questions Why are there no index cards in Rome? How do Italians live so long with all those bad habits? Join the author as she poignantly recalls lessons both serious and silly from her seasons in Italy.

Saints and Soccer Balls My Seasons in Italy eBook Clare Fleishman

Saints and Soccer Balls is a revelation. Clare Fleishman draws us into the real Italy, the one beyond the pretty veneer of bella figura. She is a knowing and shrewd guide; enchanted by her adopted home, but, like Byron, Henry James, D.H. Lawrence before her, remaining detached enough to offer nuanced insights into the Italians. The memoir is a woman's journey -- at once critical, humorous and insightful -- into one of the world's most fascinating cultures. The writing is elegant, and, like Italy, the pleasures are many.

Saints and Soccer Balls My Seasons in Italy eBook Clare Fleishman Reviews

Beautiful descriptive writing of life in Italy. If you want a first-hand glimpse at the intriguing ins and outs of Italy and its culture, this is your book! What a lot of research and paying attention! The first line of the book sums it up "I went kicking and screaming to Italy and left the same way four years later."
GOOD BOOK I WAS A LITTLE CONFUSED AT TIMES AT THE AUTHORS OPINION OF ITALY.ALOT OF SPELLING MISTAKES OF PLACES AND ITALIAN WORDS
Clare Fleishman is an exceptionally talented writer. Her style, insight and genuine interest in her subject makes this book a wonderful reading experience. I was deeply disappointed when I learned that this is her only published book.
Great book to learn more about Italy. Funny stories, the reality of the tough parts and pure joy from the simplicity.
I really enjoyed the author's humor and having spent some time in Italy it really hit home. I recommend this book
It was interesting to read the author's observations from her four years in Rome, although her characteristics of Italy and the Italians usually don't go beyond what you might have already read elsewhere (I certainly have).
It is a pity the author decided to sprinkle the pages with Italian words and names but did not bother to check the spelling; her self-confessed lack of a good ear for languages is not an excuse.
No, it is not spelled "senore" (signore). No, it is not Oriani Fallaci (Oriana). No, its not Fontana della Api (delle). No, it is not Fontana dei Cavilli Marini (Cavalli). It is ragazzi when you mean children, unless you meant girls only. Why was it impossible to check two or three dozen words ?
