The Marble Faun Or the Romance of Monte Beni Nathaniel Hawthorne 9781357541552 Books

I never knew of this novel by Hawthorne, written in 1860. He wrote this after spending a year and a half in Rome with his family. At first it seemed a trivial account of four friends, three of them artists, spending a time imbibing in the artistic culture of Rome. Marian, a painter with a mysterious past; Hilda, a copyist, with an innocence obvious to all; Kenyon, a sculptor and very rational person; and Donatello, from Tuscany, who has attached himself to the trio. They romp through the city, much like other tourists, as more of their character and relationships are revealed. Suddenly, a murder occurs that fractures the friendships, and fractures their souls. Innocence is lost as the crime changes their lives forever, and the guilty ones experience the gulf between sin and righteousness. There is no forgiveness or redemption to soften the ending.

small but good
great read
I got this book for my High School AP English class it was a good book but I didn't have an appreciation for it until after I was done with the class. As I look back now it was a very interesting book.
Obviously Hawthorne enjoyed a trip to Italy and felt the weight of history all around him. But he felt he needed a vague and sentimental morality tale to hang his travelogue on. And he included, consciously or not, plenty of prejudices about how woman and her influence over man causes much of the world's misery.
The concept of a character evoking a "faun" of mythology was not convincing. I thought the storyline was overly convoluted.
Dear Hawthorne Lovers,
The Marble Faun is probably the least successful of Hawthorne's novels (except the unfinished ones, obviously). But for those who want to have a comprehensive understanding of his craft and its later direction, I concede that it's a must-read. If you are looking for a first Hawthorne novel, try The Scarlet Letter instead. The House of the Seven Gables is probably the second best, and The Blithedale Romance, the third.
Happy reading,
Diane in Metuchen
This was one of my favorite novels in college. Why is it you have chosen to publish such an abridged version??? There are 49 chapters in this book. You have sold me only 23 of them. How silly and irresponsible and cruel. I wonder how many read the story so incompletely because of your irresponsibility. Ridiculous.
